Preparing your first podcast episode

Make a running order that provides direction without turning the conversation into a script reading.

Microphone, headphones and laptop in a podcast setup

Your first episode does not need a fully scripted conversation. A clear topic, a recognisable opening and a few good questions provide structure. Use studio time for the conversation and recording rather than inventing the format.

Write a short episode outline

Note who the episode is for, what the listener will gain and which questions you want to cover. Create sections with a beginning and an end. Give the host a short introduction and closing question, leaving room to follow up on answers.

Prepare your guest practically

Share the topic, expected duration, location and names of those attending. Check the pronunciation of their name and job title. Agree what to discuss beforehand and whether any subjects are outside the conversation. Let the guest know if cameras will also be recording.

Record a short test first

Have everyone say a few sentences at their usual speaking volume. Ask how to use the microphone and who steps in if there is a technical problem. Listen back, check the recording and discuss how to repeat a slip before starting the episode.
