Playing together may be part of the sound you want to capture. Tell the studio you are looking for a joint session. The number of musicians, instruments and intended result determine the space and support needed.

Share the complete lineup

List instruments, amplifiers, drum setup and vocals. Ask what to bring and what the studio supplies. Send a demo and explain whether you want to retain a live feel or make extensive changes to individual parts later.

Discuss the room and microphone bleed

Microphones can pick up other instruments too. Ask the engineer how the setup handles this and what separation is possible. Check that musicians can see one another and how everyone hears the shared mix. Have the studio explain the tradeoff between playing together and later editing.

Plan the session around complete songs

Rehearse beginnings, endings and transitions beforehand. Agree on count-ins, any click track and who decides whether a take is usable. Allow listening breaks and rest periods. At the end, confirm which takes move on to editing or mixing and how files will be delivered.
