Your first music recording session in a studio
Prepare your session with demos, an instrument list and clear agreements about engineering and files.

Hiring a recording studio can mean just the room or a session with an engineer. Explain what you want to record and who is coming. The studio can then suggest a suitable setup and level of support.
Send demos and a participant list
Share a demo, the number of songs and a list of instruments and voices. Explain whether everyone will record together or parts will be recorded separately. Say which instruments and equipment you are bringing and ask what the studio will prepare.
Allow time for the setup
Tuning, connecting equipment, placing microphones and setting up a headphone mix all take time. Ask the engineer for a realistic session schedule. Agree which passages have priority and plan a listening check before deciding a take is finished.
Agree on the next step
Recording, editing, mixing and mastering are different tasks. Ask which are included in the proposal and how many revisions are covered. Agree whether you will receive a stereo mix, individual tracks or stems, and how the files will be transferred. Have someone check that the files have arrived and can be used.
