Making vertical video in a studio

Plan your set, movement and text placement for a portrait frame before recording.

A wide studio set does not automatically make a strong vertical video. With less space beside your subject, the background, movement and camera distance become more noticeable. Test in the format you intend to publish.

Choose the final format first

Discuss whether you need vertical footage only or a horizontal version too. If you intend to crop, check with the filmmaker that resolution and framing allow it. Keep text and important details away from the edges and view a test on a phone.

Build the set for the full frame

Check how much floor and ceiling appear in a portrait shot. Keep cables and stands outside the frame and rehearse the planned movement once. Ask for a backdrop that is wide and tall enough without placing the camera too close to the subject.

List short variations

Write down the opening line, action and ending for each video. After a good take, consider recording an alternative opening with the same setup. Name files by topic and version so you know what each recording is intended for during editing.
